Sunderland Transport Interchange involved remodelling the existing infrastructure to afford weather protection improvements to the travelling public and bus passengers.
In operational terms, the interchange is one of the busiest facilities in the country with approximately 750,000 departures per year.
The presence and physical impact of the development was substantial and a well planned and carefully organised operation was essential, as the Transport Interchange was fully functional whilst the works were being carried out.
Free access to the Transport Interchange was only available between the hours of 12.00 midnight and 5.00 AM and also Sundays, subject to relocation of alternative bus stands.
Northern Constructional Solutions Limited was appointed as specialist contractor for the removal and replacement of structural foundations, drainage, retaining walls, hard landscaping & street furniture removal and installation.
The works were phased to ensure minimal disruption to the travelling public and Transport Interchange operations and were successfully handed over within an agreed timescale and budget, with a high standard of workmanship and without any safety issues or complaints from the travelling public.
